Early Learning Years and Primary School

Nursery - Grade 5

Today's students are confronted with a vast array of options. Our challenge as educators is to provide young people with the values and opportunities that will enable them to make wise choices.

The "Information Age" with its deluge of data, relentless pace and global outlook, demands a new approach to education. The International Baccalaureate's (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) is totally committed to the Inquiry Approach to education, helping students to relate their knowledge and skills to everyday life.

The aim of the IB PYP is to assist schools in their efforts to develop the individual talents of the students and teach them to relate their experiences in the classroom to the realities of their world.

The PYP offers a framework that meets the academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural needs of the students. IB students become critical and compassionate thinkers, lifelong learners and informed participants in local and world affairs. They are conscious of the shared humanity that binds all people together while respecting a variety of cultures in the world.

This model is expressed through three inter-related questions:
  • What do we want to learn?
  • How best we will learn?
  • How will we know what we have learned?
FLAG plans to offer the Primary Years Program from Nursery to Grade 5 and is based on the concept of structured and purposeful inquiry. Teachers and students are guided by six organizing themes which provide the framework for the exploration of knowledge:
  • Who we are
  • How the world works
  • How we express ourselves
  • Sharing the planet
  • How we organize ourselves
  • Where we are in place and time
Structured inquiry, using the six organizing themes, relates the experience of the classroom to the realities of the world. The questions are used to explore traditional academic subjects including Maths, Science, Information Technology, Social Studies, Languages, the Arts and Personal, Social and Physical Education. The PYP encourages involvement in Music, Drama, Sports and Community Service.
